The 90 credit Diploma is an intensive 1-year course, with the option of a 2nd year follow-on. If you love games and have often thought about how to change them to make them better, then this could be the course for you. The course is hard work (we don’t just sit around playing games), but if you are interested in games development then it doesn’t seem like hard work at all! You don’t need to have any previous experience of designing games, but you do need to be creative. You should be interested in many different genres of games and play on different platforms. We cover all aspects of games development, not just focussing or one particular discipline. By looking at all aspects of games development it gives you a real appreciation of the different elements that go into the making of a game. You’ll work individually and in teams to develop several 2D games during the first year, moving onto 3D games development in the 2nd year. During the first year you’ll also study 3D modelling, games design, games industry, digital graphics, games testing and concept art for computer games.
You will be studying 10 units over the one year including units: Games Design Games Industry Concept Art for Games Digital Graphics 3D Modelling Games Testing
To apply for a place on this popular course, you need to hold at least 4 GCSEs including both English Language and Mathematics at a grade \'C\' or above.
Successful completion of the 90 credit Diploma leads to a 2nd year 180 credit Extended Diploma.
At the end of the year: BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma Creative Media Production (Games Development) (90credit). This is equivalent to 3 AS levels.
Classes are a mixture of theory and practical classes. Assessment is by coursework and you can usually base your coursework around your own ideas for games. You will be taught through presentations, practical demonstrations, 1:1 support and tutorials and group critiques.
You must complete all ten units in the first year to pass the course and to be considered for entry into the second year. There are five core units which must be completed. Assessment is via practical assignments, course work, presentations and class work in each unit. You will be awarded a Pass, Merit or Distinction grade for each completed unit.
You should apply through the normal application channels and you will be invited to an interview. You will be required to bring a games design proposal to the interview that we can discuss with you.
You have the opportunity to work on extra-curricular projects as part of our independent games studio ‘Visual Dynamic’. Gain valuable experience for your C.V. working with real clients wanting real solutions for real projects.
