    How will you be taught?

We place emphasis on enabling students to develop the independent learning capabilities that will equip you for lifelong learning and future employment, as well as academic achievement.  A mixture of independent study, teaching and academic support through the personal academic tutoring system enables you to reflect on progress and build up a profile of skills, achievements and experiences that will enable you to flourish and be successful.

You are taught through a combination of interactive workshops, practical sessions, lectures and seminars. Interactive workshops take a variety of formats and are intended to enable the application of learning through discussion and small group activities.  Seminars enable the discussion and development of understanding of topics covered in lectures, and practical sessions are focused on developing subject specific skills in technique and performance.

You will learn how to develop and demonstrate a thorough understanding of dance techniques in contemporary, ballet and commercial styles. You will have the opportunity to acquire extensive skills in dance practice and realisation, develop your dance performance ability, gain a critical understanding of the dance industry. You will also possess the ability to apply principles associated with safe practice as a basis for physical efficiency and professionalism.

In addition, individual and group meetings with personal academic tutors are scheduled on a weekly basis.

You have an opportunity to participate in additional touring performance opportunities with our IGNITE Dance company. Students enrolled on this course will also have the opportunity to gain an associate IDTA professional dance teaching qualification (optional/extra costs apply).

    Contact time

In a typical week you will have around 18-20 contact hours of teaching.  The precise contact hours will be dependent on which modules are being taught in each Semester.

Typically class contact time will be structured around:

    • 2 hours interactive workshops
    • 4 hours lectures/seminars
    • 12 hours practical sessions

    Independent self-study

In addition to the contact time, you are expected to undertake around 22 hours of personal self-study per week.  Typically, this will involve reading journal articles and books, working on individual and group projects, independent rehearsals, undertaking research in the library and online, preparing coursework assignments and presentations and preparing for practical examinations.

Kidderminster College’s Learning Resources Centre (LRC) provides support for course related books, e-books, journals and other specialist learning material. Two Mac suites, two dance studios and the theatre will be available to students for independent study outside of timetabled hours.

In addition to the facilities at Kidderminster College independent learning is also supported by a range of excellent learning facilities at the University of Worcester, including the Hive and library resources, the virtual learning environment, and extensive electronic learning resources. • How will I be assessed?

The course provides opportunities to test understanding and learning informally through the completion of practice or ‘formative’ assignments.  Each module has one or more formal or ‘summative’ assessments which are graded and count towards the overall module grade.

Assessment methods include practical examinations of technical classes and performance and a range of coursework assessments such as essays, appraisals, portfolios, reflective logs and presentations.

You must complete all 14 Modules over the 2 year programme in order to achieve the full HND qualification.
