The Level 3 Extended Diploma in Music Production & Studio Recording is a highly popular, industry-lead course, which offers learners the opportunity to develop the creative skills and knowledge to define a career in the ever-expanding fields of studio recording, studio production and live sound for concert and theatre. Learners study under the close guidance of staff, many of whom have years of production and recording experience and still maintain direct links to the industry. Learners are encouraged to use the studios and production suites for as many hours as it is possible to book for both course and personal projects. The course covers all aspects of recording and live sound focussing on hands-on-experience. Using state-of-the-art equipment, learners are given many opportunities to learn, experience and practise all the skills that are fundamental to this exciting career path. There are also opportunities for developing compositional skills across a variety of styles to include learning how to create film and documentary soundtracks. Learners are encouraged to listen and develop production knowledge across a broad spectrum of music. The course is aimed at learners of all ages and levels of experience that have an interest or background in music creation, music recording, live sound and music production. It is not specific to any particular genre. During your time with us you will study across our 3 iMac Music Production Suites and two professional Digital Recording Studios. We are an approved Steinberg Training Centre and are able to offer a wide variety of resources from industry standard manufacturers such as; Apple, Steinberg, Native Instruments, EMU, Korg, Yamaha and Tascam.
A wide range of units will be studied over the 2 years, including: Live Sound for concert and theatre Listening to Music Music Sequencing Using a Keyboard Digital Recording & Production Analogue Synthesis Studio Sound Recording & Mixing Using Dynamic Processors & Multi Effects Composing for Film Planning for a Career in Music Setting up a Music Business
5 GCSE’s at grade 4 (formally grade C) or above, which should ideally include English and/or Mathematics. Alternatively you should have successfully have completed a level 2 programme in the subject area with an overall Merit profile. Mature learners will be considered on an individual basis. A passion for the subject and the potential to work well independently and the ability to work well with others is essential.
You will need to attend an interview and an audition or present a portfolio of work as appropriate to the subject area. During this process individual circumstances where learners do not fully meet the entry requirements may be considered.
Many of our learners progress on to our HND in Creative Music Technology or onto other University courses.

The course is run across four days Monday – Thursday.
There is a high emphasis on practical work. A large number of the units are assessed practically with elements of written essays, reports, presentations and 1-2-1 tutor assessments.
The course can be studied as a 1 year 90 credit subsidiary, which can allow mature students (19+) a quicker entry route onto our HND in Creative Music Technology.
