The role of the Apprentice is to help ensure that the school site and buildings are kept clean, safe, and secure and in a good state of repair, as well as conducting regular projects to improve facilities to further enhance the school site. You must ensure health and safety is at the core of all site related operations.

  • Maintain high levels of water hygiene within a building.
  • Support the Site Team in all areas of building compliance (asbestos, legionella, fire etc.).
  • Demonstrate and implement energy, environment, and sustainable practices.
  • To help maintain the fabric of school buildings and fixtures and fittings.
  • To decorate interior/exterior areas of the school, as required.
  • Carry out repairs to the fabric of a building, for example repairs to walls, doors, doorframes, skirting boards, or plaster damage to internal walls.
  • To improve and repair furniture and fittings as required.
  • Understand and maintain plumbing and drainage systems, for example repairs to WC systems, leaking taps or water testing and unblocking drains.
  • Understand and maintain electrical distribution, safe repair of electrical installation to legal requirements, for example replacing damaged sockets, plugs, lighting, and fuses.
  • Understand and maintain plant, safety systems and equipment.
  • Demonstrate and implement energy, environment, and sustainable practices.
  • Understand and maintain grounds and external fabrication of a building, such as drainage and guttering.
  • Understand and demonstrate the safe use of hand tools, for example screwdrivers, power drills, pliers, paper strippers and a variety other tools used in plumbing and carpentry.

  • Understand and demonstrate the principles of Planned Preventative Maintenance.
  • Understand how to prepare for refurbishment or deep clean of equipment and surfaces.
  • To ensure site security, lock and unlock buildings (doors and windows) and gates as required for usage during the school day, including for community users outside normal school times (NB the latter will attract additional payment).
  • Ensure security alarms are set when appropriate.
  • Be a nominated key-holder.
  • Advise the Site Manager of security breaches.
  • Maintaining the boiler house and plant in a clean and tidy order and ensuring clear access to all service isolators (gas, electricity, water).
  • To act as a designated Fire Marshal (training will be provided) and respond to fire alarm activations when required.
  • To carry out manual tasks including the removal of refuse.
  • Assist the Site Team in relocating furniture and equipment as required to facilitate school events/lettings and learning requirements.
  • Share in other general site related duties.
  • Remove rubbish and items for re-cycling to the appropriate bins on the site.
  • Ensure that storage areas are kept tidy with materials stored safely.
  • To undertake porterage tasks as required including setting up and clearing away furniture.
  • To support with the safety, suitability, and maintenance of all school vehicles.
  • Support with the MOT, servicing and general maintenance of all school minibuses and other utility vehicles in conjunction with the rest of the Site Team.
  • Organise service, MOT or repairs as and when required.
  • Ensure vehicles are prepared and ready for usage as and when necessary.
  • Drive the minibus as required (full, clean UK license is required, additional minibus training will be provided).
  • This job description allocates duties but does not direct the amount of time to be spent on carrying them out and no part of it may be so construed.

The successful candidate will be subject to an enhanced DBS.

Annual wage – £9,254.44
